Job Summary The Director of Engineering will lead and manage the Engineering team and coordinate all activities to assure department success.
The Director of Engineering is responsible for determining what requires outsourcing to Engineering firms versus internal engineering.
The Director of Engineering is a mentor to members of the Fraser Industries Engineering Department and is also involved in other organizational duties such as quoting and bidding processes, vetting mechanical, electrical systems and suppliers, optimizing the design and production process.
Responsibilities Oversees the Engineering Department and acts as a mentor to all members of the Engineering Department.
Works as a team player with all organizational functions and supports teamwork amongst them.
Develops the Fraser Industries Engineering Department to be a resource to the business and knows what positions need to be hired to fulfill future needs.
Develops and implements Engineering Procedures and Standards.
Partners with department managers to provide technical guidance and best practices while identifying coaching and mentorship opportunities.
Driving innovation through the research and implementation of new programs, manufacturing systems, machinery, tools, and products to optimize operational capacity and overall efficiency.
Directs and drives the utilization of problem-solving methods for related business and customer issues.
Responsible for improving process efficiency through best practices, SOP's, and lean manufacturing.
Supports the quoting and bidding process as well as the build process for various products and production lines (vessels/boats), understanding the technical specifications.
Maintains relationships with vendors, such as Naval Architect Firms, and knowledge of common industry components.
Manages outside engineering contracts, such as subcontracted Naval Architect Firms.
Maintains a professional relationship with customers as well as regulatory, i.
e.
, USCG, US Navy, Great Lakes shipping fleets, etc.
Supports Marine Surveying efforts as needed, such as surveying vessels in accordance with ABS regulation, surveying damages (including failure of equipment), non-destructive examinations as needed.
Understands regulatory requirements and ensures proper application in all engineering related activities (i.
e.
, ABS, USCG, ABYC).
Supports ongoing efforts in writing grant proposals for state and federal grant planning.

Superior computer skills, with solid experience in Design Software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, and Orca.

Qualifications Degree in engineering or naval architecture or similar field required.
Experience working in the naval architecture field preferred, shipyard experience preferred.
A minimum of 10 years of Engineering/Naval Architecture experience.
Extensive experience leading an engineering team required.
Physical requirements Position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Ability to work in a manufacturing environment which includes moderate noise exposure, occasionally climbing up steep stairs/steps, walking for moderate periods of time over even and uneven terrain, reaching forward, overhead, and to the sides, etc.
Must have listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
Must be able to work in areas at times that are not environmentally controlled.
Ability to move/lift/pull/push 50 lbs.
